Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year is approaching! Do you know what Chinese New Year is? Chinese New Year, Lunar New Year, or Spring Festival is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. It is often inaccurately called "Lunar New Year", because—as part of the lunisolar Chinese calendar—the date is partially determined based on lunar phase. The festival traditionally begins on the first day of the first month in the Chinese calendar and ends with Lantern Festival which is on the 15th day. Chinese New Year's Eve, a day where Chinese families gather for their annual reunion dinner. It is also the longest and most important festivity in the Chinese Lunar Calendar. This holiday is celebrated in countries and territories with significant Chinese populations, such as Mainland China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Vietnam, and also in Chinatowns elsewhere. According to tales and legends, the beginning of Chinese New Year started with the fight against a mythical beast called the Nien. Nien would come on the first day of New Year to devour livestock, crops, and even villagers, especially children. To protect themselves, the villagers would put food in front of their doors at the beginning of every year. It was believed that after the Nien ate the food they prepared, it wouldn’t attack any more people. One time, people saw that the Nien was scared away by a little child wearing red. The villagers then understood that the Nien was afraid of the colour red. Hence, every time when the New Year was about to come, the villagers would hang red lanterns and red spring scrolls on windows and doors. People also used firecrackers to frighten away the Nien. From then on, Nien never came to the village again. The Nien was eventually captured by Hongjun Laozu, an ancient Taoist monk. The Nien became Hongjun Laozu's mount.
Preparations for Chinese New Year has been made. My parents have put up decorative Chinese items like a small model dragon has been put at the entrance of my house. My parents have also put a piece of paper containing the word “fu”, which means wealth in the Chinese language, upside down on our door. By putting it upside down, it means that wealth come to us, as upside down and come is pronounced the same in the Chinese language. Also, we have put up a Chinese drawing of a rabbit as this is the year of the Rabbit. Other than these, other Chinese decorations are put up. If your race is Chinese, have you decorated your house? If not, quickly do so now!

A day of shopping.

Yet another day of my life has passed, and it was spent on shopping. Do you like shopping? I don’t, as I find it boring and tiring, but today, but today, I was shopping for items for a special event. I was shopping for clothes for the wonderful Chinese New Year! Despite my hate towards shopping, I went along with my mother to shop as I had to buy new clothing for my favorite upcoming Chinese holiday. We first went to several warehouse sales to see what they had to offer. My mother bought a new shoe, and several dresses there, my sister also found a shirt she really liked, and thus, bought it. Next, we went to a “crocodile” sale, but as we did not find anything particularly appealing there, we did not buy anything and moved on to the next location: A shopping street near Rochor. As there were many shops there, we spent the rest of the day there. The first few shops we went to sold women’s lingerie and clothing, so my brother, father and I had not bought anything yet. After that, we went to larger and better known shops to make purchases. There, we bought some shirts, shorts, and jeans, but I did not like them so I did not buy anything still. After shopping and dinner, and while on the way to the car park, we saw an ice cream vendor, we queued for a lengthy period of time, but once we reached, it turned out that they had run out of stock! How unlucky! We then proceeded to the car park, and that was the end of our shopping trip that day.

A special moment I enjoyed with my family and friends.

It was a beautiful day today, I first went to my piano lesson, it is very important to me as my practical piano exam is approaching in the next few months. Then, I went to East Coast Park with my entire family and good friends. It was a nice fulfilling day, as i got to do many exciting and enjoyable activities, such as rollerblading, cycling, and swimming with my all my good friends! We also built several sand castles and holes in the sand to fill with water! We also made balls of sand to throw at each other! We then took a nice long stroll along the park, observing the nice scenery and also tried to find where all the nook and crannies were. We also played "mini soccer" along the beach, several times, the ball rolled into the sea, and we had to swim in to retrieve it! After all of that, i had a nice, good and clean bath. During the evening, i bought several cups of delectable "bubble tea",A little known fact about bubble tea. Originating from Taiwan, bubble tea or "Boba" tea is a tea beverage containing the gelatinous tapioca pearls. The word "bubble" refers to "bubbling", the process by which certain types of bubble tea are made, and not the actual tapioca pearls., and shared them out with all my friends! But the highlight of the day was yet to come! My friends had come to my house, bringing their mobile computers, and we played an online game together! We were playing a First Person Shooter and we were playing really well! After that event ended, I watched a nice and interesting movie with high ratings before my friends left and also before I slept... A fine and enjoyable ending to a perfect day. And I hope I can enjoy many other enjoyable days like this again!

A day of my life

It is a normal Saturday, and I woke up at the usual time normal people always do. I started the day eating some high calcium and low fat cereal. I spent the day doing something I quite enjoy, alone. My parents had gone out to go to an expo, and I was left at home with my siblings and nothing to do, but I decided to spend my time wisely, by spending the time reading the book, Tuesdays with Morrie. It is a wonderful book. Where a sports writer pays a visit to his old college professor, Morrie Schwartz, after hearing of his illness. The meeting rekindles the relationship between the two after years apart. I recommend this book to people of all ages. It is about life lessons that Morrie passes down to Mitch Albom. This book taught me lessons about life, and most importantly, one cannot learn how to live unless one knows how to die. After reading the book, I watched a movie, namely, The Simpson’s Movie. In this movie, Homer accidentally pollutes the town's water supply, Springfield is then encased in a gigantic dome by the EPA to prevent their poisons from spreading and the Simpsons family are declared fugitives, but in the end, they still saved the town from the EPA (Environment Protection Agency). After the movie, my family and I ate my mother’s homemade food for dinner. Although this is not the most interesting of days, it still shows a day of my life.

The day I cleaned my cupboard.

It was a fine day today, I woke up at a late time as this is one of the days I do not have school, I then proceeded to brush my teeth and eat a normal breakfast my mother prepared for me, but today is not a normal day. It is the day I clean my cupboard! While cleaning my cupboard, I came across many interesting items. Firstly, I found an old keychain with my name on it. I then discovered that one of my old primary school teachers had given it to me for Children’s Day! The keychain has a picture of a smiling cartoon boy, I then kept it in a small box I use to store treasured possessions! I also found many unused stationery like pencils, pens and rulers, I took them all out and gave them all to my mother to use, and of course, I kept some for my own personal use. Next, I found several old notebooks that I had used for drawing in when I was young. It contained many weird looking pictures, when I came across a picture of a person. I realized that I had tried drawing a portrait of someone, whoever it was, I had forgotten. I found many other useless pieces of paper and threw them away. I also found many small and old toys. I looked at all of them with fond memories, before giving them to my young cousins. And after throwing away many old items, and here, I have finally finished cleaning my cupboard.
